How to Wash and Care for Your Cotton Bras So They Last Longer

Cotton bras are a wardrobe staple for a reason: they’re breathable, soft against the skin, and comfortable for all-day wear. But like any innerwear, how you wash and store them makes a real difference to how long they hold their shape and support. Here’s a simple care routine that works.

Hand Wash When You Can

Hand washing is gentler on the elastic, fabric and hooks than a washing machine. Use lukewarm or cool water with a mild detergent, gently swish the bra through the water, and pay a little extra attention to the underarm and strap areas where sweat and product residue tend to build up. Avoid hot water, as it can break down elastic fibres over time and cause the band to lose its stretch.

If You Do Machine Wash, Protect It

If hand washing isn’t practical, always fasten the hooks first to stop them snagging on other clothes, place the bra in a mesh laundry bag, and use a gentle or delicate cycle with cold water. Skip the dryer entirely, heat is one of the fastest ways to wear out elastic and any padding.

Don’t Wring, Don’t Rub

Wringing out a wet bra twists and stretches the fabric out of shape. Instead, gently press out excess water between two towels, then lay the bra flat on a fresh towel to air dry, or hang it by the centre gore rather than the straps, which can stretch under the weight of water.

Keep It Out of Direct Sunlight

Drying in direct, harsh sunlight can fade colours and make cotton fibres brittle over time. A shaded, well-ventilated spot indoors works best.

Store Bras Cup to Cup, Never Folded

Folding one cup into the other flattens the shape and weakens the fabric structure over time. Instead, stack bras cup to cup, side by side, in a drawer, or use a dedicated lingerie organiser if you have the space.

Rotate Your Bras

Wearing the same bra two days in a row doesn’t give the elastic time to recover its shape between wears. Rotating between two or three bras through the week helps each one last noticeably longer.

Replace When It’s Time

Even with the best care, elastic wears out. If the band has gone slack even on the tightest hook, or the fabric has thinned and lost its shape, it’s time for a fresh one. Browse Elina’s cotton hosiery bra collection for soft, breathable, everyday styles built for comfort.
