The Ultimate Lingerie Gifting Guide: What to Buy Her This Season

Lingerie makes a thoughtful, personal gift, but it’s also one that’s easy to get wrong if you’re guessing on size or style. A few simple guidelines make the difference between a gift that sits in a drawer and one she actually reaches for.

    Size Is Everything

Unlike most clothing, an ill-fitting bra isn’t just a style miss, it’s genuinely uncomfortable to wear. If you know her size, great. If you’re not sure, it’s worth asking directly (there’s no shame in it) or opting for something size-flexible, like a soft robe or sleepwear set, and letting her pick her own bra separately. If you do want to gift a bra and you’re unsure of the exact size, choosing from a brand with a clear exchange policy gives her the option to swap it for the right fit.

    Comfort First, Always

The occasion matters, but comfort should still come first. Soft, breathable fabrics like cotton hosiery work well for everyday and loungewear gifting, while a matching lingerie set feels special for anniversaries or celebrations without sacrificing wearability.

    Consider the Occasion

For birthdays or “just because” gifts, a comfortable everyday bra in a favourite colour is a safe, thoughtful choice. For anniversaries or festive gifting, a coordinated lingerie set feels a little more special. For a self-care or new-mom gift, prioritise soft, non-wired, full-coverage styles that are gentle and supportive.

    Don’t Overlook Plus Sizes

Plus size shoppers are often underserved by mainstream lingerie gifting, extended sizes, wider bands, and sturdier support are not always easy to find. Choosing from a brand that carries a genuine range, like our plus size bra collection, means the gift is as thoughtful in fit as it is in style.

When in Doubt, Add a Note

If you’re at all unsure on size, include a gentle note letting her know it can be exchanged. It takes the pressure off and makes the gift about the gesture, not a perfect guess.

  • Plus Size Bra Guide: Finding Support, Comfort and Confidence

Plus Size Bra Guide: Finding Support, Comfort and Confidence

Finding a bra that offers real support without sacrificing comfort can be harder than it should be for plus size shoppers, many mainstream ranges simply stop at a certain size, or offer styles that weren’t designed with a fuller bust in mind. Here’s what actually matters when choosing a plus size bra.

    A Wider, Sturdier Band

The band does most of the supporting work in any bra, and that matters even more at larger sizes. A wider band distributes weight evenly around the ribcage instead of concentrating it on the shoulders, reducing the digging-in and discomfort that comes with narrow, standard-width bands.

    Full Coverage Cups

Full coverage cups hold the entire breast securely within the fabric, avoiding spillage at the sides or top that’s common with cups designed for smaller sizes. This also gives a smoother, more supported look under everyday clothing.

    Wider, Cushioned Straps

Thin straps that work fine at smaller sizes can dig in painfully when carrying more weight. Wider, cushioned straps spread that load across a larger area of the shoulder, making a real difference over a full day of wear.

    Breathable, Soft Fabric

Cotton hosiery fabric allows air to circulate and moisture to escape rather than trapping heat against the skin, especially important under a band and straps that are doing more supportive work. It also tends to feel softer against the skin over long wear than synthetic alternatives.

    Non-Wired Doesn’t Mean Less Support

There’s a common assumption that underwire is necessary for support at larger sizes. In practice, a well-constructed non-wired bra with a sturdy band and full-coverage cup can offer excellent support while being noticeably more comfortable, especially for sensitive skin or all-day wear.

    An Extended, Genuine Size Range

A size chart that stops short doesn’t help. Look for brands that offer a genuinely extended range across both band and cup sizes, rather than one or two “plus” options tacked onto a standard line.

    Start With an Accurate Size

All of the above only works with the right starting size. Use our at-home measuring guide or the free bra size calculator to get an accurate number before you shop.

Elina’s plus size bra collection is built around all of these principles, cotton hosiery fabric, full coverage, wider bands and straps, and a genuinely extended size range, so support and comfort don’t have to be a trade-off.

  • How to Measure Your Bra Size at Home: A Complete Fit Guide

How to Measure Your Bra Size at Home: A Complete Fit Guide

If your bra has ever left red marks on your shoulders, ridden up your back, or left you adjusting it every twenty minutes, there’s a good chance the size on the tag isn’t your real size. Sizing varies between brands, and most of us bought our “usual” size years ago and never checked again. The good news is that measuring yourself properly takes about five minutes and needs nothing more than a soft measuring tape.

    What You’ll Need

A flexible measuring tape (the kind used for sewing), a well-fitting or unpadded bra, and a mirror if you’d like to double-check your numbers. Do this in front of a mirror so you can keep the tape level all the way around.

Step 1: Measure Your Band Size

Wrap the tape snugly around your ribcage, directly under your bust, where your bra band would normally sit. Keep the tape parallel to the floor and pull it firm enough that it doesn’t sag, but not so tight it digs in. Round the number to the nearest whole inch. If the number is even, add 4 inches; if it’s odd, add 5 inches. This gives you your band size.

Step 2: Measure Your Bust Size

Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, usually across the nipple line, keeping it level at the back as well. Wear a light, unpadded bra for this if you can, since a padded one will throw the number off. Round to the nearest whole inch.

Step 3: Calculate Your Cup Size

Subtract your band measurement from your bust measurement. The difference in inches tells you your cup size: 1 inch is an A cup, 2 inches a B cup, 3 inches a C cup, 4 inches a D cup, 5 inches a DD/E cup, and so on, going up roughly one cup size per additional inch. Put the band number and cup letter together and that’s your size, for example 38C or 42DD.

    A Few Fit Tips

The band should sit level all around your torso, not ride up at the back. Straps should stay on your shoulders without digging in, and you shouldn’t need to constantly pull them up. The centre gore (the bit between the cups) should sit flat against your breastbone. If any of these feel off even after you’ve matched the size chart, don’t hesitate to try the band a size down or a cup size up, called a “sister size” — the fit can vary a little by style, especially between wired and non-wired, or padded and non-padded designs.

    Skip the Guesswork

If you’d rather not do the maths yourself, Elina’s free bra size calculator does the working out for you: just enter your band and bust measurements and it’ll tell you your size instantly.

  • 5 Signs You’re Wearing the Wrong Bra Size (And How to Fix It)

5 Signs You’re Wearing the Wrong Bra Size (And How to Fix It)

A lot of discomfort that we quietly put up with all day, at work, at home, on a long commute, actually comes down to one thing: the wrong bra size. Since sizing isn’t standardised across brands and our bodies change over time, it’s worth checking in on your fit every so often. Here are five clear signs it’s time to.

    1. The Band Rides Up at the Back

Your band should sit level, front and back, and stay put. If it creeps up towards your shoulder blades over the course of the day, the band is too loose, or too large. Try going down a band size and up a cup size to keep the same volume with a snugger fit.

    2. Straps Dig In or Keep Slipping

Straps that leave deep marks on your shoulders are usually doing work the band should be doing. Since the band provides roughly 80% of a bra’s support, a too-loose band forces the straps to compensate, digging in as a result. Straps that keep sliding off, on the other hand, often mean the band is too big or the strap length hasn’t been adjusted.

    3. Cups Gape or Spill Over

Gaping at the top of the cup means the cup size is too big for you; visible spillage at the top or sides means it’s too small. Both are common, and both are simple to fix by adjusting cup size while keeping the band size steady, moving up or down what’s called a “sister size.”

    4. The Underwire Pokes or Sits on Breast Tissue

An underwire should sit flat against your ribcage, framing the breast tissue rather than cutting across it. If it pokes at the sides or centre, the cup is too small. If you find wired styles uncomfortable altogether, a well-fitted non-wired, full-coverage bra can offer the same support with a softer feel.

    5. You’re Adjusting It All Day

If you find yourself constantly pulling straps up, tugging the band down, or shifting the cups, that’s your body telling you something doesn’t fit. A correctly sized bra should feel secure enough that you forget you’re wearing it.

    How to Fix It

From there, our plus size bra collection is built in cotton hosiery fabric with a wider size range, so it’s easier to land on a size that actually feels right.

  • How to Wash and Care for Your Cotton Bras So They Last Longer

How to Wash and Care for Your Cotton Bras So They Last Longer

Cotton bras are a wardrobe staple for a reason: they’re breathable, soft against the skin, and comfortable for all-day wear. But like any innerwear, how you wash and store them makes a real difference to how long they hold their shape and support. Here’s a simple care routine that works.

    Hand Wash When You Can

Hand washing is gentler on the elastic, fabric and hooks than a washing machine. Use lukewarm or cool water with a mild detergent, gently swish the bra through the water, and pay a little extra attention to the underarm and strap areas where sweat and product residue tend to build up. Avoid hot water, as it can break down elastic fibres over time and cause the band to lose its stretch.

If You Do Machine Wash, Protect It

If hand washing isn’t practical, always fasten the hooks first to stop them snagging on other clothes, place the bra in a mesh laundry bag, and use a gentle or delicate cycle with cold water. Skip the dryer entirely, heat is one of the fastest ways to wear out elastic and any padding.

    Don’t Wring, Don’t Rub

Wringing out a wet bra twists and stretches the fabric out of shape. Instead, gently press out excess water between two towels, then lay the bra flat on a fresh towel to air dry, or hang it by the centre gore rather than the straps, which can stretch under the weight of water.

Keep It Out of Direct Sunlight

Drying in direct, harsh sunlight can fade colours and make cotton fibres brittle over time. A shaded, well-ventilated spot indoors works best.

Store Bras Cup to Cup, Never Folded

Folding one cup into the other flattens the shape and weakens the fabric structure over time. Instead, stack bras cup to cup, side by side, in a drawer, or use a dedicated lingerie organiser if you have the space.

    Rotate Your Bras

Wearing the same bra two days in a row doesn’t give the elastic time to recover its shape between wears. Rotating between two or three bras through the week helps each one last noticeably longer.

    Replace When It’s Time

Even with the best care, elastic wears out. If the band has gone slack even on the tightest hook, or the fabric has thinned and lost its shape, it’s time for a fresh one. Browse Elina’s cotton hosiery bra collection for soft, breathable, everyday styles built for comfort.

  • How to Choose the Right Everyday Bra for All-Day Comfort

How to Choose the Right Everyday Bra for All-Day Comfort

An everyday bra has one job above all else: to disappear. You shouldn’t be thinking about it during a long work day, a commute, or while running errands. Getting there isn’t about buying the prettiest bra, it’s about paying attention to a few practical details.

    Start With the Fabric

For daily wear, breathable fabric matters more than almost anything else. Cotton hosiery blends allow air to circulate, absorb sweat rather than trap it against the skin, and tend to feel softer over long hours than synthetic satin or lace-heavy styles, which are better saved for occasion wear.

    Wired or Non-Wired?

Underwire can offer defined support and lift, but it needs to fit precisely, a wire that’s even slightly off in size will dig in by the afternoon. Non-wired, full-coverage bras use a wider base and structured cups for support instead, and tend to be the more forgiving, comfortable choice for all-day, everyday wear.

Coverage Matters More Than You’d Think

Full coverage styles hold the entire breast within the cup, reducing spillage and giving a smoother look under fitted clothing. Balconette or plunge styles suit specific necklines but usually aren’t built for the same all-day support.

    Padded vs Non-Padded

Non-padded bras breathe better and feel lighter, ideal for warm weather or sensitive skin. Light padding can smooth out the look under thin fabrics and offer a bit more shape, without straying into the heavier, structured territory of push-up styles.

    Band Width and Straps

Since the band carries most of the support, a wider band distributes that weight more evenly and is less likely to dig in than a thin one, particularly important for fuller busts. Wider, cushioned straps offer the same benefit for the shoulders.

    Get the Size Right First

None of the above matters if the size itself is off. If you haven’t checked your size recently, our guide to measuring at home or the free size calculator takes a couple of minutes and removes the guesswork.

Elina’s everyday cotton hosiery bras are built around exactly these principles: breathable fabric, full coverage, and a size range designed for real, everyday comfort.
